Private Cord Blood Storage

更新日:2012年7月23日

We are sometimes asked if we will preserve cord blood for the exclusive use of the baby. We do not participate in such private cord blood banking.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has pointed out that the vast majority of children will never require the use of stored cord blood, and called for the intervention of regulatory agencies. (Pediatrics 104(1):116-118, 1999)

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in Britain also has been warning that routine directed commercial cord blood collection and stem cell storage cannot be recommended at the present time.

There are exceptional cases when the Blood Centre cooperates with oncologists and obstetricians in the targeted cryopreservation of the cord blood of the newborn baby.

This happens when the elder child is suffering with a cancer or leukaemia, needs a stem cell transplantation, and the mother coincidentaly had a baby who can be a sibling donor.
We need the close cooperation of the doctors and a contract with the transplant centre. The expences for testing and processing the cord blood has to be paid.
